The Language Chronicles: El Choro Lingüístico 💬

[Contenido en portugués - Content in Portuguese] Eis algumas observações e vivências na minha viagem a Belém do Pará, o Portal da Amazônia: Tá calor pra caramba! (Hasta siendo Tampiqueño me quejo...estamos muy cerca del ecuador.) Nos livros de história na escola sempre vinha como um fator de crescimento em cidades prósperas um clima bom. Aquí é longe de ser um clima bom (sou de uma cidade com o mesmo clima, então posso falar!), mas como tem prédio alto na cidade! Ela (zona metropolitana) tem quase 2.2 milhões de pessoas. Indo de Uber do aeroporto para o hotel percebi uma bachata no rádio do carro. Bachata é a música tradicional da República Dominicana que é muito popular nos EUA porque tem muito caribenho lá (e ali já tem muita letra em Spanglish - o "idioma" com que cresci nos EUA). Acontece que o Gustavo Lima é fã de artistas latinos como Prince Royce e Romeo Santos e ele tá usando muitos arranjos musicais da bachata em suas músicas. A bachata é um dos meus tipos de música

Yesterday at the #FAUBAI Conference 2019 in Belém, Brazil, UDEM (Universidad de Monterrey) gave a presentation on the programs they have for refugees. Under their umbrella, they have programs for the typical refugee from Syria (from the perspective of American eyes although the presenter is was M) among others, and it was interesting to hear that even our brothers from Syria with war-torn countries have concerns about the crime rate in Mexico when deciding to come live here (I'm writing as if I was in Mexico now).  When the presenter started talking about those of Mexican descent who were taken to the USA as children, and then how they were supported through a scholarship called ReconoceR, I couldn't help to feel weird as we (returnees and deportees)  were being discussed as the subject of study in a presentation at an International Education Conference. I don't even know if I'm trying to make a point here, but I felt:  1. A huge disconnect being now an International Ed
